Broadband project launch set for Dewar

A broadband expansion project that will bring fiber-optic internet service to 256 homes and businesses in the Okmulgee County community of Dewar will officially launch Thursday.

The Oklahoma Broadband Office and EcoLINK will hold a first-connection event at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dewar City Hall. Oklahoma Broadband Office Executive Director Mike Sanders, East Central Electric CEO Dwayne Elam, legislators and community leaders are expected to participate.

The project is supported by a $657,000 grant and is one of more than 180 broadband expansion projects funded through federal American Rescue Plan Act programs aimed at improving high-speed internet access across Oklahoma, particularly in rural areas. State broadband officials say grants administered by the Oklahoma Broadband Office are expected to connect more than 66,000 homes and businesses statewide.

The broadband office is a state agency that administers federal grant funds to expand access to high-speed internet in Oklahoma.
