Drummond announces grand jury indictments in trafficking and fentanyl death cases as gubernatorial runoff begins

Cases involve allegations of child exploitation and a fatal fentanyl distribution as the attorney general turns his attention to Oklahoma’s GOP runoff campaign.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Multi-County Grand Jury on Thursday indicted two men in separate cases involving alleged child sex trafficking and a fatal fentanyl overdose, Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced.

The announcements came two days after Drummond finished first in Oklahoma’s Republican gubernatorial primary and advanced to an Aug. 25 runoff, where he will face former state Sen. Mike Mazzei.

In Tulsa County, the grand jury indicted Jiray Jivar Clay, 27, on 10 felony charges stemming from allegations that he trafficked multiple victims for commercial sex, including three minors between the ages of 16 and 17.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, Clay faces four counts of human trafficking for commercial sex, one count of solicitation of a minor, two counts of possession of child sexual abuse material, two counts of distribution of child sexual abuse material and one count of using a computer to violate Oklahoma statutes.

Investigators with the Tulsa Police Department’s Human Trafficking-Vice Unit began investigating Clay in January 2025 after his name appeared in multiple reports involving commercial sex. Authorities said a forensic examination of Clay’s cellphone uncovered months of communications with juvenile and adult females and evidence that he allegedly arranged commercial sex encounters and posted online advertisements that allegedly included child sexual abuse material.

“Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, and the exploitation of children for profit is among the most disturbing crimes imaginable,” Drummond said in a statement. “We will continue working alongside our law enforcement partners to find traffickers, rescue victims and hold offenders fully accountable.”

In a separate case, the grand jury indicted DJ Simpson, 40, in connection with the November 2025 fentanyl overdose death of Kambri Newsom, a 29-year-old mother of three in Oklahoma County.

Simpson faces charges of first-degree murder, or alternatively second-degree murder, along with distribution of a controlled dangerous substance. According to the indictment, Newsom died of fentanyl toxicity after Simpson allegedly distributed the drugs to her. The state medical examiner determined fentanyl caused her death.

Investigators also allege Simpson knew Newsom had struggled with addiction and had maintained a period of sobriety before her death.

“This is a heartbreaking case of a young mother who fought hard for her sobriety, only to have her life stolen by someone who knew exactly what he was doing,” Drummond said. “Drug dealers who prey on people in recovery are committing murder, plain and simple, and justice demands they be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

The Attorney General’s Office noted that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
