Munson wins governor’s nomination as Democrats finalize statewide and congressional tickets

House Minority Leader Cyndi Munson captured the Democratic nomination for governor in a landslide as the party finalized most of its statewide and congressional ticket, leaving only the U.S. Senate race headed to an August runoff.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Democrats finalized most of their statewide and congressional ticket Tuesday night, highlighted by House Minority Leader Cyndi Munson’s landslide victory in the race for governor and a lone runoff in the contest for U.S. Senate.

Munson captured 74.9% of the vote to win the Democratic nomination for governor, defeating former state Sen. Connie Johnson, who received 22.3%, and candidate Arya, who garnered 2.8%. Unofficial results showed all precincts reporting statewide. Munson advances to the November general election, where she will face the winner of the Republican runoff between Attorney General Gentner Drummond and former state Sen. Mike Mazzei.

Democrats also settled two other statewide contests.

Rhonda Eastman won the Democratic nomination for Corporation Commission with 70.0% of the vote, defeating Harold D. Spradling, who received 20.1%, and Donald Anthony Clytus, who finished with 9.9%. Jennettie Marshall secured the Democratic nomination for state superintendent, defeating Craig McVay by a 57.7% to 42.3% margin.

The party’s only statewide runoff will come in the race for U.S. Senate. N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas led the five-candidate field with 45.2% of the vote, falling short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. Jim Priest finished second with 23.9%, earning a spot in the Aug. 25 runoff. Troy W. Green received 19.8%, while Ervin Stone Yen and R.O. Joe Cassity Jr. finished in single digits.

Democrats also selected nominees in four congressional districts.

Brandon Wade defeated Erik Terwey 73.7% to 26.3% in the 2nd District, while Suzie Byrd defeated Jules Roberson 67.4% to 32.6% in the 3rd District. In the 4th District, Mitchell Jacob prevailed over Jeff Pixley 54.4% to 45.6%. In the 5th District, former Oklahoma Teacher of the Year and 2022 Democratic nominee for state superintendent Jena Nelson defeated Trey Martin 56.7% to 43.3%.

With nearly all of its nominees decided, Democrats now turn their attention to the November general election, leaving only the U.S. Senate nomination to be settled in the Aug. 25 runoff.
