David Smith survives House District 18 runoff by 103 votes

Three House districts were effectively decided Tuesday, while six contests move on to the November general election.

OKLAHOMA CITY — State Rep. David Smith narrowly held onto his seat Tuesday, defeating Pamela Gordon by 103 votes in the Republican runoff for House District 18.

Smith received 1,598 votes, or 51.7%, to Gordon’s 1,495 votes, or 48.3%, according to unofficial State Election Board returns. All 42 precincts had reported.

The Arpelar Republican was the only sitting House member on the runoff ballot. The other eight districts featured open seats created by retirements, term limits or lawmakers pursuing other offices.

Because no Democratic, Libertarian or independent candidate filed in District 18, Smith secured another term pending certification. He was first elected in 2018.

Two more House seats settled

Two other Republican runoffs effectively chose new representatives because no November opponents remain.

Chris White defeated George Phipps with 52.2% of the vote in House District 1. Pending certification, White is set to succeed Rep. Eddy Dempsey, who did not seek reelection.

Michael Brittingham won House District 19 with 63.2%, defeating Anthony DeVore. With no general-election opponent, Brittingham is set to succeed Rep. Justin Humphrey.

Six races move to November

Scotty Stokes won the closest open-seat runoff, defeating Crystal Campbell by 102 votes in House District 9. Stokes received 51.1% and will face Democrat Andrea Biscardi in November for the seat being vacated by term-limited Rep. Mark Lepak.

Madison Bolay defeated Danielle Deterding with 58.1% in House District 38. Bolay will face Democrat Doyle Lewis in the general election. The seat opened when Rep. John Pfeiffer ran for labor commissioner.

Toby Thompson received 60.7% against Kevan Gentry in House District 47. Thompson advances against Democrat Indigo Oliver for the seat being vacated by Rep. Brian Hill.

In House District 81, Troy Talley defeated Rusty Rains with 59% of the Republican vote. Talley will face Democratic nominee Megan Hornbeek Allen in November to succeed Rep. Mike Osburn, who did not seek reelection.

Roberto Seda defeated Teresa Sterling with 53.5% in House District 91. Seda will face Democrat Chris Fowler for the seat being vacated by term-limited Rep. Chris Kannady.

Herschel Brown won the night’s only Democratic House runoff, receiving 67.8% against Carlos Robinson in House District 99. Brown advances to face Republican Melvin Latham for the seat being vacated by Rep. Ajay Pittman.

The runoff results remain unofficial. Statewide results are scheduled for certification Sept. 1.
