Trump’s net favorability was 50 points higher among Republicans than among registered voters statewide in polls conducted during the same four days.
OKLAHOMA CITY — President Donald Trump remains overwhelmingly popular with Oklahoma Republicans heading into Tuesday’s runoff, but voters statewide are almost evenly divided over him.
Trump was viewed favorably by 74% of Republicans and unfavorably by 23%, according to Cole Hargrave Snodgrass & Associates.
In the statewide poll released Thursday, which included registered Republicans, Democrats and Independents, Trump was viewed favorably by 49% and unfavorably by 48%.
That is a 25-point difference on both ends. Trump’s favorable rating is 25 points higher among Republicans, while his unfavorable rating is 25 points lower.
The contrast becomes even sharper when the intensity of those opinions is considered.
Among Republicans, 53% viewed Trump strongly favorably and 16% strongly unfavorably. Statewide, 36% viewed him strongly favorably and 42% strongly unfavorably.
Trump’s net favorability — positive ratings minus negative ratings — was plus 51 among Republicans but only plus 1 statewide, a 50-point difference.
Both surveys were conducted Aug. 3-6 and asked the same favorability question. The numbers show how differently Republicans view Trump from the broader Oklahoma electorate, not a change in his standing between surveys.
The difference provides a backdrop for Tuesday’s Republican runoff for governor. Trump has endorsed former state Sen. Mike Mazzei and sharply criticized Attorney General Gentner Drummond.
“Clearly, Donald Trump is helping to define this contest,” pollster Pat McFerron wrote in his analysis of the runoff survey.
The Republican runoff survey included 600 likely Republican runoff voters. The statewide survey included 500 registered voters. Both used live calls to mobile and landline phones and text messages directing respondents to an online questionnaire.
Each survey had a margin of error of 4.3 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
