Chamber Backs Pardoned Felon in Oklahoma County Assessor Race, Upending GOP Primary

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Greater Oklahoma City Chamber has endorsed a Republican candidate with a past felony conviction — later pardoned — in the Oklahoma County assessor race, a striking move that is reshaping a traditionally low-profile primary and putting new pressure on longtime incumbent Larry Stein.

The endorsement of challenger Ferlin Kearns, first reported by The Oklahoman, places one of the state’s most influential business groups squarely in the middle of the June 16 Republican contest.

Stein told The Oklahoman he was “floored” by the decision, underscoring the unusual nature of the Chamber’s involvement — and its willingness to back a candidate whose criminal history has become a central issue in the race.

Kearns, who received a pardon for his prior felony conviction, has argued voters should focus on his qualifications and his plans to change how the assessor’s office operates.

A low-profile office, now a political fight

The Oklahoma County assessor’s office plays a key role in setting property valuations that directly affect tax burdens for homeowners, businesses and local governments.

With property values rising across the Oklahoma City metro, the race has taken on increased political and economic importance — particularly for the business community.

The Chamber’s endorsement signals those stakes, elevating the contest and potentially altering its trajectory in the final weeks before the primary, according to The Oklahoman.

Political risk — and a calculated bet

Backing a candidate with a felony record — even one who has been pardoned — carries political risk, particularly for a high-profile organization like the Chamber.

At the same time, the decision indicates Chamber leadership views Kearns as a credible alternative in a race that could shape how property assessments are handled going forward.

Institutional support could also boost Kearns’ visibility and fundraising in a race where incumbents typically hold the advantage.

Primary ahead

The Republican primary is scheduled for June 16, with the winner advancing to the general election.

The race now stands as a test of whether GOP primary voters — and influential business groups — are willing to look past a candidate’s criminal history following a pardon and instead weigh experience, policy and performance.
