Paxton Praises Signing of Foster Care Extension Bill

OKLAHOMA CITY — Senate President Pro Tempore Lonnie Paxton on Monday praised Gov. Kevin Stitt for signing legislation that extends foster care services for eligible young adults from age 18 to 21.

Under Senate Bill 1806, young adults receiving services through the Oklahoma Department of Human Services may voluntarily remain in care until age 21. The measure also allows some former foster youth who previously aged out of the system to reenter services if they are under 21.

Paxton said the new law will help provide stability for young adults transitioning to independence who may lack family or financial support.

“This law helps provide stability during a critical period in their lives and gives them a stronger foundation for long-term success,” Paxton said in a statement.

To qualify for extended services, participants must be enrolled in school or workforce training, employed at least 80 hours per month, or unable to participate because of a documented medical condition.

The law takes effect July 1.
